If you've kept up with tech or business news in recent years, you've likely learned that information security jobs are in huge demand. The range of cyber security careers, however, covers a number of skills and titles. Those interested in information security careers can benefit from learning about the different types of occupations before entering the field.

Analysis

In the world of infosec jobs, it's important for someone to study all the available data from systems to determine what, if anything, might be happening. One study indicated that the average American company takes 206 days to detect a data breach. Being able to identify intrusions and deploy resources is often a major money-saver.

Analysts are also increasingly at the cutting edge of technologies in the field. AI-based systems have become important in the industry, and analysts need to be able to glean information from machine learning insights to inform other parties about what to do.

Investigations and Forensics

Once an intrusion has been dealt with, there are still huge questions about what happened in the first place. Investigators from companies and governmental organizations will be tasked with identifying criminals, including networks, and figuring out how to bring them to justice. Forensics experts will also go through the available information about an attack to gain insights into what can be done to prevent future intrusions.

Security Architects

Devising structures to prevent attacks and cope with them calls for a great deal of organization. Security architects are responsible for looking at how the systems within an operation work together. They'll make decisions about what protocols need to be in place, who has access to machines and how those machines will be configured to fend off potential attacks.

Administrators

Most locations have one or two individuals who take responsibility for keeping systems secure. This includes making sure that servers are set up properly, patches are being scheduled and applied and best practice are in use. Administrators also tend to have hiring authority over security engineers who are responsible for infosec jobs like programming, database maintenance and machine configuration efforts.

Security Engineers

Engineers get hands-on with the job of implementing security measures. If an online store system needs access to a database, it's the engineer's job to ensure that connections will be set up securely. When new computers, databases and pieces of software go into use, engineers are responsible for making sure they're safe.
